How to Read Chevy VIN Numbers by Era

1960s – 1970s (Pre-1981 — 13 digits)

1st digit = GM Division (1 = Chevy)
2nd & 3rd = Series or Model (e.g. 23 = Camaro)
4th & 5th = Body Style or Engine Type
Next = Model Year (e.g. 9 = 1969)
Plant Code = Letter (e.g. N = Norwood OH)
Last 6 Digits = Production Sequence Number

1981 – Present (Standardized 17-Digit)

1–3: World Manufacturer ID (e.g. 1G1 = Chevrolet USA)
4–8: Vehicle Attributes (engine, body, restraint system)
9: Check Digit (verifies validity)
10: Model Year (A = 1980 … Y = 2000 … R = 2024)
11: Plant Code (F = Flint, Z = Fremont, etc.)
12–17: Sequential Production Number

RPO Codes — The Secret Inside the Glove Box

RPO stands for Regular Production Option, and it’s the secret language of your car. Every Chevy left the factory with a Service Parts Identification label — usually in the glove box, console lid, or trunk. Each three-character code on that label corresponds to something unique: paint, transmission, suspension, interior trim, or even whether it left the line with air conditioning or a limited-slip diff.
